Hey everyone:
I’m an investigator volunteering my time on an old unsolved mystery based out in Las Vegas. Part of this mystery, which I’ll explain below, involves a man who previously worked as a trucker. I have no knowledge of the industry and was hoping someone could help me with some general questions. (Note: This is not a criminal investigation; just trying to provide some closure for man’s family).
The mystery involves a John Doe (“JD”) who was found deceased in 2006 in Las Vegas. It was discovered that the identity JD was using for several years was stolen from another man, who was still alive in California.
Using this stolen identity, JD had gotten a valid CDL license and worked as a truck driver for several years before his death. Part of my investigation has been tracking down his employment history. Towards the end of his life, he worked regional routes in Las Vegas. However, for a full year in 2004, he worked for a major common carrier in the USA. We are assuming he worked out of a Vegas terminal (but not confirmed). Based on traffic citations, we know he drove routes through northern California and Oregon.
Here’s where I’m looking for general help.
According to employment verification documents JD worked a common carrier company one year exactly (JAN 04 – JAN 05). His separation status was Voluntary, yet he was Not Rehirable. We have no access to his alcohol or drug testing, however, we know he had two (2) previous citations for speeding and not maintaining a logbook in the four (4) months prior to his employment ending. We also know he finished a route two (2) days prior to his employment ending.
So:
1) Could JD have signed a contract with this major common carrier for one (1) year? Does the industry work on contract work like that?
2) Do major companies typically offer to train and help drivers earn their CDL in exchange for commitment to work at the company for a certain period of time?
3) Any ideas what could account for being voluntarily separated by Not Rehirable? Are there certain goals or metrics you must reach as a driver for a major trucking companies?
4) Do long-haul truckers typically drive the same route for a period of time? Or are they always driving new routes and going to different destinations?
5) Is it common for long-haul truckers to be largely transient — living in short term rental places and maintaining PO Boxes in several states? Or is this lifestyle unusual for the industry?
I’d truly appreciate any help or advice here. Feel free to also comment on anything you think I’m missing here. Along with this thread, you can also email at Francis.T.Rocha@gmail.com. Thanks!
