$70,000 is low pay? or $24/hour is low pay? A typical 8 hour day, 5 days a week, 2 weeks off per year will add up to 2,000 hours of work per year. At $24/hr that equals $48k per year gross (double the hourly rate in dollars to find the yearly rate in thousands). Let’s assume no vacation,12 hours per day, 5 days per week. That equals $74,880 gross per year. Often home daily is working 12 hours per day and being off as close to 10 hours as possible. The company is NOT required by Federal regs to pay overtime if you work more than 40 hours. They may choose to pay OT or they may have a contract that requires them to pay OT. Trucking is specifically exempt from the Federal overtime pay requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act or FLSA. Whatever hourly rate of pay they are quoting will be accurate, but they are not in the business of paying any more than it takes to get JUST ENOUGH drivers to get the job done.

BTW, In those 10 hours off from work daily you have to squeeze your commute, your sleep, eating, showering etc. Working nights is easy unless you have family or friends or hobbies.
